HKCA Emerging Players Pre Season Write Up

The HKCA Emerging Players cricket side have returned from the Hawkes Bay with some extremely valuable pre-season cricket under their belts having had 4 games on grass against strong opposition over the weekend. The 20/20 tournament hosted by Hawkes Bay Cricket and sponsored by Kilbernie Sports is now a popular fixture on the calendar with our Association lucky enough to gain a spot amongst the 16 strong sides to compete.

Whilst most teams had their eyes on the $1000 Kilbernie Sports Vouchers for winning, we entered with a focus on development, gaining learning's and preparation for the impending season. The lads gained immense value batting and bowling on grass and put up some very good performances against opposition that included a number of representative cricketers from Hawkes Bay, Wellington and Auckland’s top club sides.

Captain Andre Halbert lead his youthful side superbly, showing why he is the man tasked with leading the Bears into battle this season whilst a number of players showed that they will be creating headaches for the selectors as the depth of talent within our region continues to build.

We would like to say a huge thank you to Craig Findlay and his team for running such a high quality tournament that we were grateful to be a part of. We trust that our lads took immense value from the experience and will reap the rewards of this in the upcoming season. We will definitely be back next year!

Emerging Players Vs Wellington Under 19’s

Horowhenua Kapiti played Wellington U19 at Donnelly Park on Sunday. Captain Andre Halbert inserted Wellington making first use of a pitch that looked to offer a bit to the bowlers early coupled with overhead conditions that were conducive to swing. A superb 102 by Gareth Severin ensured a healthy run chase for the Bears as he anchored the innings for Wellington with support from Nick Greenwood’s 39. Wickets were shared throughout the innings with Daemon Kennett taking 2-28 off his 10 overs in a brilliant performance, ably supported by Carter Andrews (2-49 off 20) and Zack Benton (2-31 off 8). In reply Horowhenua Kapiti suffered the loss of early wickets and at 45-5 were well on the back foot. 57 from player coach Chad Law who was the last man out helped carry the total to 158 with valuable support from the in form Dion Sanson (28) debutante Keegan MacLachlan (26) and Liam Pinfold (15). Left arm orthodox Jessie Tashkoff was the pick of the Wellington attack taking 3-16 off 8 and looks a very strong prospect. Despite the Bears best efforts they fell short in a game that was full of immense positives and learnings as they build towards their first Furlong Cup fixture in Masterton on 10/11 November followed by the Chapple Cup in Napier the following weekend.
